NFL Photo of the Week
I love photos like these from football games played in poor weather conditions. The more rain, and snow, and mud, the better. Featured this week is Steelers running back Jerome Bettis plowing by Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher for a first down in a snowstorm during the fourth quarter of the Steelers' 21-9 win. A super collection of the best photos from Week 14 in the NFL can be found on the league's Web site.
Defensive driving
The Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday that the Bears Brian Urlacher and his daughter walked away unhurt from a car accident Monday. The Tribune story said that Urlacher's car suffered damage when it was rear-ended. Seems Urlacher is having a run of bad luck with vehicles lately. As you can see in the photo above, the linebacker was hit hard by a bus on Sunday.
Next time go with rock, paper, scissors
How bad was the Packers' 16-13 overtime victory over the Lions Sunday night at frigid Lambeau Field? It was so bad that the coin toss for the extra period is being called "one of the more enjoyable moments of the game." Well, at least that's what Mike Pereira, the National Football League's director of officiating, said in Tuesday's New York Times. In case you missed it, referee Mike Carey gathered the captains of both teams at mid-field for the OT coin flip. Carey searched through all four of his pockets and found himself Coinless in Lambeau. The coin Carey had used at the beginning of the game had been given to an honorary captain for the night's game. From there, Carey made his way to the sidelines, asking everyone from coaches to ball boys for spare change. Carey finally pinched a penny from a field judge. "I think I'll recommend that the referees put a coin in their back pockets," Pereira told the Times. "I'll probably tell umpires to keep a coin, too."
